Miguel Coelho, PhD
A scientist is an island of knowledge. Some are smaller, others larger, but all are in constant evolution and can contribute to the biggest project of mankind since the rise of civilization: the spread of knowledge. We are the product of readings, experiments, conversations, dreams, travels and hard work. Our everyday is an adventure into the unknown, building bridges, connecting islands.
A tribute to people who inspired me

My PhD Boss and Muse. The strongest of imprints so far. Thank you for showing me the way from quantifying to communicating.

Simon taught me the virtues of good controls and hardcore biochemical experiments. Much obliged!

Professor Coutinho encouraged me to ask questions in seminars and wispered Dresden in my ear. It had the shine of something new, indeed. Obrigado Professor.

Miguel kept an eye on me since my early steps in the Gulbenkian, when he started his group there. Always offering advice and asking important questions, he shares some of my passions for research, like aging, telomeres, genetic instability and evolution.

One of the finest men I know. He is a brilliant scientist, whose passion for research is only outweighed by his talent for sports. He is a brother, a mentor and a well of strength. My passage through Dresden wouldn't have been the same without him.

Monica's cheerfulness and sharp eye for interesting biological problems is matched only by her will to do science. She is a mentor and a friend.

Matt's joviality and strong personality triggered my interest when we first met in the Woods Hole aging course. Unaware of this status and huge contributions to science, I was drawn to his constant questioning and we shared some interesting discussions about aging. We still meet occasionally at the campus or retreats.

My current boss is a Big Thinker and an excellent mentor. Doch.

This is my hero. He is smart, energetic, fast and has a huge talent for people. Kai helped me during my PhD, by discussing science, giving scientific and personal advice and made me realize how hard work and perseverance increase the chances of succeeding. And he is good at soccer too!

Thomas evaluated my thesis as an external reviewer and during my defense and I was impressed by his ideas about science, aging, publication methods and life. He is a very knowledgeable scientist and a great mentor/advisor.

Wolfgang was my co-advisor during my PhD studies. He was extremely generous with his time towards me, and the door of his office was always open. We had long discussions about science, experiments, the meaning of a PhD and of being a scientist, cooking and also about the world soccer championships. He is a friend and a mentor, and meeting him was an enriching experience.

Isabel awakened my interest in evolution. As a young group leader in the Gulbenkian, she helped to apply for PhD abroad, while we were conducting a Tetrahymena evolution experiment in collaboration with the Soares lab.
